Recollections
What elements make up our memories? What do we choose to remember? How do we piece together the past? Does it matter if our memories are accurate or not?
As I created this body of work I consciously thought about the elements I utilized. I burnt the wood in order to bring out the grain. The history of the tree is embedded there, each circle representing the story of a year that passed. The act of burning itself bears witness to the transmutation that happens with the passage from experience to memory, and from life to death. The gold leaf represents how memories are often held in a dream like reality, shimmering and unreal. I found these photographs in a small bookstore in Budapest and the majority of text is from a Hungarian children's book. The simple drawings and foreign text evoke the viewers own imagined narratives.
